Heart and Soul

Throughout the years since time began,
the children of our nation
Have grown up knowing they might fight
for freedom and salvation;

With courage, pride and, yes, some fear,
to battle they would go;
Some returned, some never did,
but all the world would know

That these were true Americans,
the protectors of our land;
They gave so much - sometimes their lives -
to keep our country grand.

From coast to coast, we'd welcome them
as they returned back home;
We'd let them know how proud we were
of the courage they had shown.

Then, some time along the way,
through politics intense
The wars that they were asked to fight
no longer made much sense.

With all the problems here at home,
why put them in harm's way
and make them fight for goals unknown,
with such a price to pay?

But, still, our men and women go,
"to keep the peace," they're told;
And, like the patriots that they are,
they fight with heart and soul.

Let's never cease to honor them,
despite how we might feel,
Because each loss is still so great,
and each sacrifice so real!
